When Amherst was incorporated in 1759, the colonial governor ordered residents to name the town after Jeffrey Amherst, a hero of the French-Indian War.     Amherst police has again received a $300,000 grant from the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women to allow a program helping domestic and sexual violence survivors to continue. The grant was obtained in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Police Department, the University of Massachusetts Center for Women & Community and the Northampton Police Department, according to a press release.
