About: Cleveland, Tennessee

Cleveland was established in 1837. The city was named for Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, who was a commander at the Battle of Kings Mountain during the American Revolutionary War. The official association between the US federal government and the greater Cherokee Nation, the Cherokee Agency, was moved in 1819 to an area near present day Cleveland. This area would be a prominent factor during the Cherokee Removal of the late 1830s.

The dispute comes from a disagreement on how the local portion of taxes on mixed alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises should be divided for education.
