About: Richmond, Indiana

In the early 1800s, during a period of westward migration after the American Revolution, several Quaker families from North Carolina settled along the East Fork of the Whitewater River. Today Richmond still remains home to several Quaker institutions, including Friends United Meeting, Earlham College and the Earlham School of Religion. The city is sometimes known as "the cradle of jazz," because several early jazz records were made in Richmond at Gennett Records Studio, a division of the Starr Piano Company.

    <![CDATA[Kip Coates Richmond, Ind. - Kip Coates, 52, of Richmond, passed away at his home. Kip was born on November 28, 1961 in Richmond to Bill and Karen Schultz Coates. Kip graduated from Northeastern High School in 1980. Kip studied at Purdue University and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He graduated from Purdue in 1984 with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and immediately began a career at Belden in Richmond, where he was a member of the 25-Year Club. Kip enjoyed the love and support of his family, being a loving Uncle to Kayla and Molly, and the love and support he received from his Greens Fork Christian Church family. He enjoyed trap shooting, fishing trips to Canada and a good round of golf. He also volunteered at Help The Animals in Richmond. Kip will be missed by his mother, Karen Bryan (Duane); father, Bill Coates (Brenda); brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Carolyn Coates; and nieces, Kayla and Molly Coates. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, August 21, in the Greens Fork Christian Church, 116 East Pearl Street (State Road 38). Interment will follow in Fairfield Cemetery near Greens Fork. Family & friends may gather for visitation from 11:00 am-1:00 pm on Thursday, August 21, at the church. Memorial contributions may be given to Help The Animals, 2101 West Main Street, Richmond, IN 47374. Online condolences may be expressed at www.smithmcquistonwebster.com .

    <![CDATA[Richard Gaylord Franklin RICHMOND, Ind. - Richard Gaylord Franklin, age 90, of Richmond, died Sunday, August 17, 2014. Born August 27, 1923, in Worthington, Indiana, to Harley A. and Floy Burger Franklin, Gaylord was a 1942 graduate of Worthington High School. He had lived in this community since 1960. Gaylord and his wife, Nina, were former owners and operators of Henry's/Henery's Restaurant in Richmond for 25 years, Camp Delite Campground on Centerville Road in Centerville, Indiana, and Blooming Valley Greenhouses on N.W. "L" Street in Richmond. He was a member of Faith Trinity United Methodist Church, Webb Lodge No. 24, F. & A.M., Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite, Murat Temple, Tarum Shrine Club having been a past-President, Tarum Shrine Fire Department having served as Fire Chief, and Masonic Glee Club. Gaylord loved to play cards and sing. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Nina A. Warren Franklin; daughter, Belinda Kay "Penny" (David) Leach of Clarksville, Indiana; son, Anthony Lee "Tony" Franklin of Richmond; grandchildren, Mina Leach, Anna Leach, Nathaniel Anthony Franklin, Lauren Nevzuroff, Shannon Spon, Tyler Franklin, Logan Franklin, Roman David Leader, and Brian Dewayne Leader; many great-grandchildren; sister, Kathryn Ruth Carson of St. Petersburg, Florida; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Donna S. Leader; and sister, Edna Maxine Kramer. Visitation for Richard Gaylord Franklin will be from 12 to2:00 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. James Spon officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery.
