"We are providing quantifiable data on the safety and quality of the medicine," said Santa Cruz-based organic chemist Josh Wurzer, co-founder and lab director of SC Labs, which tests 8,000 samples a month, from Humboldt and Tahoe to inner city Los Angeles. "Our integrity is critical," said Wurzer, a blonde and clean-cut Midwesterner. The company tested 300 to 400 samples in its first few months, and the owners didn't take a paycheck for three years.

    Both entrances to UC Santa Cruz are closed Thursday morning as as part of a four-day student protest against UC tuition hikes, racism and nationwide police violence. University police have closed Bay Avenue at Nobel Drive/Iowa Drive. Empire Grade, as of 7 a.m., was open to traffic. Joseph Loffredo, husband of the Merrill College provost, waited for five minutes in his Ford Focus while students voted on whether to let him on campus. Students on the picket line say the expect demonstrations to last throughout the day.
