    The Wilkes-Barre District A Fund Committee will sponsor a 5K Run/Walk 11 a.m. Nov. 8 at Miner Park, Old River Road, to raise funds for the annual Veterans Day Parade Committee and AmVets Post 59. According to Sam Greenberg, treasurer of the annual parade committee since its inception in 1948, the budget is about $10,000 and the committee has raised $7,000 of that through donations from local veterans posts and private citizens. Sue Greenfield of the District A Fund said pre-registration for the race is $15 and $30 on the day of the race.

    A Wilkes-Barre resident and his dog caught an armed intruder in his house early Thursday and held the man at gunpoint until police arrived to make the arrest, according to city police. Police charged Shawn M. Reichart, 30, of 852 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with burglary and criminal trespassing after the citizen's arrest that took place at about 2:30 a.m. at a home at 788 N. Pennsylvania Ave. The victim, Eugene Godlewski, told police he had been in bed asleep when his daughter called his cellphone asking if he was downstairs because she heard banging, according to a police affidavit.

    A family of black bears was shot and killed at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport on the morning of Oct. 20, according to Pennsylvania Game Commission officials. A mother bear and her three 2-year-old cubs crossed the perimeter fence of the Avoca airport, creating an immediate threat to airport customers and incoming flights, said Pennsylvania Game Commission officials.
