About: Castro Valley, California

Castro Valley is located in central California. The city was named in honor of Don Guillermo Castro, a rancher and a soldier in the Mexican army. Castro was given a land grant that consisted of 28,000 acres. Because he had a gambling habit, he ended up having to sell off portions of the land in order to pay off some of his gambling debts. During the 1940s and 1950s Castro Valley was known for its chicken ranches. Today it exists as a residential community comprised of individuals who commute to the larger surrounding cities.

    The women weren't seriously hurt. In San Leandro, a man in his 70s was crossing Washington Avenue in a crosswalk at Monterey Boulevard when he was hit by a rental truck making a turn about 11:20 a.m. Friday. The truck driver was cooperative with police. The victim was taken to San Francisco Hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. "The driver of the sedan initially left the scene but stopped and contacted police," siad Officer Gordon Shyy, a San Francisco police spokesman. Henry K.     Firefighters from Alameda County extinguished a two-alarm fire at a triplex in Castro Valley this morning, a fire department spokeswoman said. The first call came in at 8:41 a.m. of a fire at 21041 Wilbeam Ave. Firefighters responded and contained the fire to the building of origin within 20 minutes, Alameda County fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.

    Friends, family and coworkers said Bob Morgan will always remembered for his work in the nuclear engineering field, military service and his incredible sense of humor. Morgan died Nov. 27 at Laurel Creek Health Center in Fairfield, California, at the age of 84. Born Feb. 12, 1930, he grew up in Castro Valley, California, and after high school, he received an appointment to the United States Military Academy in 1948 and graduated with a bachelor of science in military engineering.
