    Rockville police have charged two men with breaking into homes in the city, and are looking for a third who also faces charges. Andrew Kim of the 14400 block of Stonebridge View Drive in Gaithersburg and David Lammawin of the 2200 block of Glenmore Terrace in Rockville are both charged with two counts each of first-degree burglary, theft of between $1,000 and $10,000, stealing another person's credit card and using another person's credit card for less than $100, plus related conspiracy charges.

    Residents of the East Village Homes communities in Montgomery Village fear that toxic particles could be released into the air during preliminary digging to build three warehouses on the former Nike missile site on Snouffer School Road. However, officials with the Maryland Department of the Environment's Voluntary Cleanup Program say studies show that levels of contaminants do not exceed limits set for contaminated commercial sites.

  • Germantown man gets 55 years for burglary, theft scheme

    A Germantown man was sentenced to 55 years in prison Wednesday for breaking into a home and stealing $14,000 in jewelry. James Cobb, 30, was found guilty in July of first-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary, and participating in a theft scheme, Cobb and an accomplice - who were already under surveillance by county police because they were suspected of several burglaries in the area - broke into a home in Germantown on Jan. 16. Cobb broke a basement window while his accomplice acted as a lookout; Cobb emerged a few minutes later.

  • With two convictions overturned, ex-soldier faces third trial

    A former U.S. Army Ranger - who was twice convicted in the fatal 2006 shooting of his roommate in Gaithersburg, but had both convictions overturned - has been released from prison pending a third trial, scheduled for May. Gary James Smith, 32, was released from prison Oct. 22 and is now under house arrest at his father's home in Olney, according to his lawyer, Andrew V. Jezic. Smith is allowed to leave the house for counseling, college, legal and medical appointments, and for his work as a carpenter - the same rules as his previous stints on house arrest, Jezic said.
