About: Hamden, Connecticut

Hamden's nickname is "The Land of the Sleeping Giant," after a hill formation in the rural northern section of town. It was settled by Puritans after being purchased from the Quinnipiack Native American tribe that originally inhabited the area. When the town was incorporated, in 1786, residents named it after the English statesman John Hampden. During the late nineteenth century, Italian and Irish immigrants poured into Hampden.     The Legislative Council approved a memorandum of understanding by a 12-2 vote Monday night in which Hamden will receive a voluntary payment of more than $1.2 million from Quinnipiac University, but the move was met with opposition from residents who spoke prior to the vote. As part of the memorandum of understanding, the town and Quinnipiac will "work together to amend the Town's Zoning Regulations in an effort to streamline the process by which University development applications are proposed to the appropriate boards and commissions.
