    NEWARK - A state appeals court today upheld the conviction of a man serving a 25-year prison sentence for kidnapping his ex-girlfriend in July 2009, mutilating part of her body and pushing her into oncoming traffic on Route 78. In his appeal, Michelet Glaude, 45, formerly of Irvington, pointed to alleged misconduct by the judge at his 2011 trial and claimed his sentence was excessive. But the appellate judges dismissed those arguments, saying the trial judge's actions were justified and that the sentence was appropriate.

    UNION - Police arrested two Irvington men they said broke into a Van Ness Terrace home and were then scared off by the security alarm. The two men, Samuel Nyagwoka, 20, and Gareek Drayton, 23, are also suspects in a burglary on Van Ness Terrace in Maplewood that occurred around the same time, police said.

Ronald Glover, a spokesman for the Newark police, said officers were dispatched to the 700 block of South 20th Street in the West Ward at around 3 p.m. for a report of a sick or possibly injured person inside a car.

    Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, confirmed that the office's Homicide and Major Crimes Task Force was investigating the death, which took place around midnight in the area of Chancellor Avenue and Stuyvesant Avenue. The homicide is the 15th in Irvington this year, and the fifth in the last 10 days.

    A northern New Jersey man who led police on a vehicle chase along a major highway has been sentenced to 18 years in state prison. Union County prosecutors say 34-year-old Dion Cromwell, of Irvington, must serve at least six years before he becomes eligible for parole under the sentence imposed Friday.
