Editor's notes: Piercing the Great Chicago Myth It's important that we confront the belief that blacks moved here from Chicago's projects Check out this story on jconline.com: http://on.jconline.com/1wblI3p I had been in Lafayette for about a week when I first heard of the "Great Chicago Myth" - the widely held belief in this community that Chicago public housing officials emptied out the city's notorious housing projects more than a decade ago and handed all the former residents one-way bus tickets to Lafayette. Having worked for a quarter-century as a reporter and editor at the Chicago Tribune, I immediately doubted that the story could be true and dismissed it as a fantasy of the local merchant who was relating it to me.
