Originally purchased from Potawatomi Native Americans the first log cabin arrived in the area in 1834. The city was named in 1837 after Valparaiso Chile where Porter County's namesake David Porter fought in the war of 1812. Today the area is home to restored Franklin House Tavern, the oldest bar in the county.     An ambulance driven by a man with three indefinite license suspensions drove through a stop sign Tuesday and hit a school bus, sending 12 students to the hospital, Porter County sheriff's police said. In all, 15 people were hurt in the crash involving a Valparaiso school bus and a Superior Ambulance around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Union Township.

Porter Superior Court Judge Roger Bradford granted a $5,000 cash bond to Fahad Alazemi who is charged with two felony and two misdemeanor counts of intimidation, felony, strangulation, and misdemeanor domestic battery.
