  • Skyway is waiting for solar speed signs
    Saturday, December 20, 2014 4:32:01 PM

Those poles that have popped up along the road are going to be "solar-powered driver feedback signs," said Butte County Public Works Engineering Project Coordinator, Scott Hightower. The signs are similar to the ones near Paradise town hall, which flashes a motorist's speed when their vehicle passes by. There are a total of 10 signs in five locations along Skyway, Hightower said. Crews are just waiting for the weather to let up so they can install the signs and complete the project, Hightower said. The project's total cost is $1,448,334.

  • Editorial: Hits and misses
    Saturday, December 20, 2014 12:12:22 PM

So it was good to hear about City Manager Mark Orme's memo to employees, thanking them for pitching in during last week's storm. A city councilor shared that as a letter to the editor, obviously with Orme's consent. While some could question why praise was needed because that's part of a city employee's job, it still is good policy that Orme took the time. Like buying bunnies at Easter, dogs and cats for Christmas may not be the best idea. It was across the street. "Hits and Misses" appears each Saturday. Items are compiled by the editorial board.

  • City of Chico to phase out Arts Commission
    Saturday, December 20, 2014 4:08:18 AM

Those that failed were to dismantle the commission entirely, to leave it as it is, and to merge it with the Architecture Review and Historic Preservation Board. Outgoing chair Muir Hughes was also disheartened by the decision. The all-volunteer commission, which has been in existence for 25 years, and all-volunteer board members of the Chico Arts Foundation have been working diligently in support for the community's economic recovery and requested only five hours of staff support every other month for its meeting, she said.
