About: Las Cruces, New Mexico

Located about 45 miles north of the Mexico border, the origin of the city's name is unknown. In Spanish "Las Cruces" means "the crosses. " Some attribute the name to crosses marking the graves of unfortunates massacred by Apaches. Most of Las Cruces's cultural events occur late in the year, a period known locally as FTFS (Full-Tilt Fiesta Season), although The Border Book Festival occurs the last weekend in April.
