About: Las Cruces, New Mexico

Located about 45 miles north of the Mexico border, the origin of the city's name is unknown. In Spanish "Las Cruces" means "the crosses. " Some attribute the name to crosses marking the graves of unfortunates massacred by Apaches.     A man accused of driving intoxicated and causing the death of his friend has been indicted on multiple charges in Las Cruces. Dona Ana County prosecutors say Estevan Herrera was indicted Thursday on eight counts including homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and aggravated driving while under the influence.

    A former client of a New Mexico personal injury law firm was convicted Thursday of aggravated battery with great bodily harm in a 2013 attack on an employee there. Although there were no visible injuries to the victim, Lovett Law Firm worker Jeffery Reyes, the Dona Ana County district attorney's office said Kendrick Keaton choked Reyes to the point of unconsciousness and destroyed furniture at the office.

    LAS CRUCES >> More than 2,000 students at New Mexico State University breathed a collective sigh of relief on Thursday when the university announced that it will pay the difference between tuition costs of the spring semester and the amount covered by the state's Legislative Lottery Scholarships for students attending NMSU's Las Cruces campus. Because of changes enacted in the 2014 state legislative session, NMSU students who qualify for the Legislative Lottery Scholarship now receive only 95 percent of the average tuition for four-year comprehensive universities in New Mexico, leaving NMSU students to pay as much as $129 out of their own pocket, or though other means of student aid.
