About: Las Cruces, New Mexico

Located about 45 miles north of the Mexico border, the origin of the city's name is unknown. In Spanish "Las Cruces" means "the crosses. " Some attribute the name to crosses marking the graves of unfortunates massacred by Apaches. Clemente De La Cruz, 26, was sentenced Monday by Chief District Judge Fernando Macias after being convicted by a jury in early December on two felonies and a misdemeanor stemming from the 2013 ambush.
