Located about 45 miles north of the Mexico border, the origin of the city's name is unknown. In Spanish "Las Cruces" means "the crosses. Eva Booker, president of the Country Club Neighborhood Association, said there are two things that need to be completed before a legal challenge is made to the city's approval of a final plat plan for development of 110 acres at the former Las Cruces Country Club, 2700 N. Main St. "We still need to review the transcript of the Battershell appeal made to the City Council ," Booker said.

    LAS CRUCES >> More than $4 million in state funding to make improvements to the city's water system and wells, and for remediation of septic systems in high-risk areas could be formally accepted by the Las Cruces City Council when it meets at 1 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 700 N. Main St. The council will also consider adoptions of resolutions that could allow several brewing companies to serve beer during a downtown street festival from noon until 5 p.m. Nov. 2. Two separate resolutions regarding the water appropriations will be presented to council for acceptance. One, for $2 million, would be used to plan, design and construct improvements to the city's water system and water wells.
