The capital of Louisiana is Baton Rouge. The land now known as Louisiana was first owned by the Spanish, then the French and was then purchased by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. New Orleans has become a huge tourist attraction, noted for the French Quarter, Bourbon Street and the annual Mardi Gras celebration. In 2005 the state was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina, which killed hundreds and devastated New Orleans. Louisiana still maintains a culturally and historically rich place influenced by a concoction of French, Spanish, Indian and African cultures.
