About: Madera, California

Madera is located in central California in Madera County. In 1876 a community was established by the California Lumber Company, later the community developed into a town. The first post office was opened in 1877, forcing residents to decide on a name to call the town. They chose Madera which means "wood" in Spanish. There are two points of interests located within Madera: the notable and historical Madera water tower, and the city's fully operational drive in movie theater.

    In Madera County three brothers are accused of narcotics trafficking. Agents searched two homes this morning on Nebaska Avenue and Sunrise Lane and found nearly $38,000 worth of meth, cocaine and marijuana.

    At two different homes in Madera, the Madera County Sheriff's Office said. Natalio Zaquero-Montalvo, 24, David Zaquero-Montalvo, 27, and Constantino Zaquero-Montalvo, 32, were booked into the Madera County Jail on suspicion of possession of narcotics and controlled substances for sale, conspiracy, and child endangerment. A loaded rifle, 124 grams of meth and 12 grams of cocaine were allegedly found at a house on Sunrise Lane. A 10-month-old infant was placed with county Child Protective Services.

Centerpiece of the new campaign is a just-launched website, UpLiftCA.org, with the tagline, "Our Air. The story bank will grow over the coming months, and a Spanish language version of the site will launch in January.

  • Agricultural lenders to aid Fresno State multicultural scholars program

    American Ag Credit, CoBank, Farm Credit West, Fresno Madera Farm Credit and Golden State Farm Credit will support the Multicultural Scholars in Agriculture program, which is created to build closer ties between the Jordan College and future agricultural leaders from Fresno, Kings, Madera and Tulare counties. The gifts from the lenders will be matched by a $200,000 Title V-Hispanic Serving Institution grant by the U.S. Department of Education. Each participating student will receive $1,500 for the 2015 spring semester.

  • Fire damages Madera auto shop

    An automobile repair shop in the 200 block of Cypress Street in Madera was heavily damaged by a fire around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Cal Fire officials said. The 200 block of Cypress was closed for several hours as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, officials with the Madera Police Department said.
